2025 Festival
The fourth annual Broad View International Film Festival took place on November 13 to 15, 2025, at Metro Cinema at the Garneau Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta. Here are the films we screened:

Janis Ian: Breaking Silence

In the mid-60s, Janis Ian, a tiny teenage Jewish singer-songwriter from New Jersey, scores a controversial hit single called “Society’s Child,” about an interracial love relationship. The song launches her illustrious career but also ignites death threats, plunging her into an emotional tailspin—only to emerge from the ashes in the 1970s with an even bigger hit, “At Seventeen,” a song ahead of its time in confronting lookism and bullying.
Janis overcomes a host of obstacles—embezzlement, record industry misogyny, and heartbreak—to find love and produce an indelible body of searingly honest songs that earn her a devoted following and critical acclaim.

Cairo Time

Juliette (Patricia Clarkson), a magazine editor, arrives in Cairo to meet her husband Mark (Tom McCamus), a UN official in Gaza. When he is unavoidably delayed, Mark sends his friend and former security officer Tareq (Alexander Siddig) to show her around the city.
As she gets used to the customs and rhythm of life in Cairo, she finds herself falling not only for the city's charms, but for Tareq as well. Set in the chaotic but intoxicating Egyptian capital, Cairo Time is a romantic drama about a brief, unexpected love affair that catches two people completely off-guard.

Nechako is a crucial documentary that follows two Indigenous Nations fighting for our collective future. When the Kenney Dam was built in the 1950s, the Nechako River was forever changed.
The Stellat’en and Saik’uz Nations embarked on a groundbreaking legal proceeding against the Canadian government and Rio Tinto Alcan that lasted over a decade—a battle that continues today. Following community members living day to day on the river while they take on powerful institutions, Nechako is an urgent call to action to restore a river and a way of life.

Hailey Rose
